Hilary Duff Opens Up About Rare but Intense Fights With Matthew Koma

Hilary Duff may share a loving relationship with her husband Matthew Koma, but she admits their marriage isn’t completely free of conflict.

During a conversation with Dakota Fanning, the Lizzie McGuire star joked about how people often ask whether working alongside her husband leads to frequent disagreements.

“Everyone’s like, ‘How is it working with your husband? Do you guys fight a lot?’ I’m like, ‘We literally never fight,’” Duff shared. While a close friend initially backed that claim, Duff quickly clarified that it’s not entirely accurate.

“Well, that’s not true,” she admitted. “We have one drag-out fight once a year.” She added that Koma recently pointed out how long it had been since their last argument, to which she jokingly responded, “Are you ready?”

Duff recalled that their most recent heated moment took place during the January 2025 Los Angeles fires, when the family had been displaced from their home. Amid the stress of relocation and caring for their four children — Luca Cruz Comrie, Banks Violet, Mae James, and Townes Meadow — tensions boiled over.

In the middle of the argument, Duff said she threw Koma’s phone into a bougainvillea bush, describing the moment as strangely satisfying. The couple later stayed with friend Mandy Moore while navigating the difficult period.

Despite the occasional explosive disagreement, Duff’s candid remarks reflect a relationship grounded in honesty — and a sense of humor about the ups and downs of married life.
