Authorities in Islamabad have announced that motorcycles will begin receiving mandatory M-Tags from February 20, 2026, expanding the city’s electronic tagging system to two-wheelers.
According to the Director General of the Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department, the rollout marks the second phase of the vehicle e-tag program. Motorcycle owners can start obtaining tags from 10:00am on launch day.
What riders must bring
To receive an M-Tag, motorcycle owners must present:
- Vehicle registration documents
- A valid national identity card
Officials say 223,566 vehicles have already been issued e-tags, with installation services currently operating at 13 designated centers across the capital.
Toll penalties already in effect
The tagging push follows earlier enforcement measures by the National Highways Authority, which imposed a 50% additional toll charge on non-M-Tag or low-balance vehicles starting June 15, 2025.
The surcharge applies across major motorway routes, including:
- M-1 (Islamabad–Peshawar)
- M-2 (Lahore–Islamabad)
- M-3 (Pindi Bhattian–Multan)
- M-4 (Faisalabad–Multan)
- M-5 (Multan–Sukkur)
- M-9 (Karachi–Hyderabad)
- M-14 (D.I. Khan–Hakla)
- E-35 (Hassanabdal–Mansehra)
Under revised rates, for example:
- Islamabad–Lahore (M-2): Rs 1,800 for cars
- Lahore–Abdul Hakim (M-3): Rs 1,200
- Pindi Bhattian–Multan (M-4): Rs 1,600
Officials say the expansion to motorcycles is aimed at streamlining toll operations, reducing congestion, and improving compliance across Pakistan’s motorway network.
