The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has announced that Ramadan 2026 will begin on Wednesday, February 18, after confirming the sighting of the crescent moon on Tuesday evening.
Earlier, moon-sighting efforts were focused in locations including Hawtat Sudair and Tumair, both situated within the Al‑Majma’ah Governorate. Observers reported favorable weather conditions for visibility. Abdulaziz Al-Muainaa from the Al Hareeq Observatory noted that sunset timing and clear skies improved the chances of spotting the crescent.
The confirmation officially marks the beginning of the holy fasting month for millions of Muslims in Saudi Arabia.
Earlier call and differing calculations
Just days before the announcement, the Supreme Court had urged citizens nationwide to attempt crescent sighting and report verified testimonies to local courts — whether observed with the naked eye or optical aids.
Meanwhile, astronomical projections had suggested the crescent would likely be difficult to see on Tuesday night, leading many astronomers to predict a Thursday, February 19 start in several countries. Despite those calculations, the court relied on confirmed physical sighting reports in accordance with traditional practice.
