WhatsApp web adds voice & video calls

WhatsApp is beginning to roll out voice and video calling support on its web app, allowing users to place calls directly from a browser — no desktop software required. This marks a major expansion of WhatsApp Web, which until now focused purely on messaging.

According to reports, the new feature adds dedicated Voice and Video buttons inside individual chats. At this stage, calling is limited to one-to-one conversations, as WhatsApp continues refining the system for stability before a wider release.

Web-based calls are expected to include end-to-end encryption, keeping privacy protections consistent with the mobile app. The update will also support screen sharing, making WhatsApp Web more practical for collaboration, quick demos, or remote help. An added benefit is compatibility with platforms like Linux, which currently lacks an official WhatsApp desktop app.

There’s no confirmed timeline for a full public rollout yet, but the move signals WhatsApp’s push to turn its browser experience into a more complete communication hub.

Separately, earlier beta updates introduced shortcuts that let users query Meta AI about messages directly inside chats. The upcoming “thinking mode” appears aimed at deeper, more context-aware assistance — suggesting Meta is prioritizing smarter functionality over flashy feature drops.
