Sindh to upgrade 300 Rabies treatment centres

The Sindh government has decided to upgrade 300 treatment and prevention centres under the Rabies Control Program Sindh (RCPS) to strengthen efforts against the deadly but preventable disease.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, who said rabies treatment facilities would be made accessible across the province at intervals of 10 to 15 kilometres. He confirmed that all 300 rabies centres in Sindh districts will be upgraded in phases.

The chief secretary said the provincial government has adopted a comprehensive and proactive approach to tackle rabies, adding that essential medicines and vaccines will be procured to ensure timely treatment for patients. The centres will be enhanced with improved facilities, standardised treatment protocols and better service delivery.

It was also decided that staff working under the rabies control programme would receive specialised training to improve their technical skills and clinical capacity. In addition, a province-wide public awareness campaign will be launched to educate citizens about the importance of timely treatment after animal bites.

Rabies is a viral disease mainly transmitted through the bite of infected dogs or other animals. It attacks the central nervous system and can be fatal if not treated promptly, making early medical intervention critical.
