5.8-magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, Rawalpindi

Strong earthquake tremors measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale were felt in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD said the tremors were also reported in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Seismological Centre confirmed that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in north-western Kashmir.

The sudden tremors prompted residents to rush out of their homes and offices in panic. However, no immediate reports of casualties or damage were received.

Earlier, in December 2025, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake had been felt in Karachi and surrounding areas. That quake, which occurred at a depth of 12 kilometres, struck at 12:51am, the Seismological Centre said.

Tremors were reported in several neighbourhoods, including SITE Area, Saddar, Clifton, DHA Phase 8 and PECHS. Residents of Shah Faisal Colony, Liaquatabad and Buffer Zone also felt the quake, with people in Liaquatabad describing the tremors as particularly strong.
