Wheat prices surge across Punjab and Islamabad amid growing shortage

Wheat prices have witnessed a sharp increase over the past ten days across Punjab and Islamabad, rising from Rs3,700 to as high as Rs4,400 per maund, ARY News reported on Friday, citing market sources.

Traders in Lahore said that 10kg and 20kg flour bags have become scarce in several areas of the city. The price of a 15kg flour bag has increased from Rs1,500 to Rs1,750. Wheat prices in Lahore have now climbed to around Rs4,450 per maund.

In other parts of Punjab, prices have surged even higher. Wheat is being sold at up to Rs4,500 per maund in Gujranwala and Gujrat, while rates in Rawalpindi have reached as high as Rs4,800 per maund. In Multan, wheat prices have risen to Rs4,450 per maund, whereas in Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, rates are around Rs4,400 per maund.

Meanwhile, wheat prices in Islamabad have also increased to approximately Rs4,400 per maund.

Commenting on the situation, Asim Raza, Central Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, said the sharp rise in prices is being driven by an increasing shortage of wheat. He warned that wheat stocks are rapidly declining and added that the surge in wheat prices is directly contributing to higher flour prices across the country.
