NEPRA Reduces Power Tariff by Rs0.93 per Unit, But Broader Increase Looms.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction of Rs0.93 per unit in electricity tariffs, offering temporary relief to consumers across Pakistan. The cut, approved under the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for November, will be reflected in January electricity bills. Major cities, including Karachi, will benefit, though lifeline consumers are excluded from this reduction.

NEPRA explained that the tariff cut aims to pass on the benefits of lower fuel costs to consumers amid rising energy expenses.

However, in a contrasting development, NEPRA has also approved a tariff increase of Rs1.79 per unit effective January 1, 2026, bringing the average electricity tariff to Rs33.38 per unit. This increase is subject to federal government approval before implementation. Currently, the average base tariff stands at Rs31.59 per unit.

The mixed decision means consumers may experience short-term relief in January bills due to the FPA reduction, but a broader tariff hike is likely to follow once the government gives its approval.
