The high-profile private attorney representing Nick Reiner resigned from the case on Wednesday, citing reasons he said he could not disclose. Following his withdrawal, the lawyer asserted that under California law, his client is not guilty of murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
Speaking briefly to reporters outside a Los Angeles courthouse, attorney Alan Jackson said that circumstances beyond both his and his client’s control had made it impossible for his legal team to continue representing Reiner.
After weeks of investigation, Jackson made a strong claim regarding his former client’s legal standing. He stated that, based on California law, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder, emphasizing the point and urging reporters to publish it. However, he declined to explain the legal basis for his assertion and did not take any questions.
Jackson’s remarks marked the first direct public statement from a representative of Nick Reiner addressing his guilt or innocence since the killings occurred three and a half weeks ago.
The comments came after a court hearing in which Reiner was scheduled to be arraigned and enter pleas to two counts of first-degree murder. Instead, following a private meeting in chambers with Judge Theresa McGonigle, Jackson requested to withdraw from the case. A public defender was subsequently appointed, and the plea hearing was postponed until February 23.
