Mount and fernandes return as fletcher takes charge at Manchester United

Manchester United will have Mason Mount and captain Bruno Fernandes available for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, giving an immediate boost to interim manager Darren Fletcher.

Speaking at his first pre-match press conference since replacing sacked head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, Fletcher confirmed that both players have recovered from injury and are set to return to the squad. Fernandes suffered a hamstring injury before Christmas, while Mount was sidelined a day later. The duo missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United but had been eager to play.

Fletcher said the pair would be eased back into action. “They’ll be on managed and restricted minutes because they’ve only just returned to training, but it’s great news, especially as they were in good form before their injuries,” he said.

The former United midfielder stressed that his focus remains firmly on the Burnley match rather than his future in the role. “The focus is on this game and then we’ll speak after,” he said, adding that discussions about staying on as manager are for after the match.

Fletcher, who made 342 appearances for United and was most recently in charge of the club’s under-18 side, admitted the experience felt surreal. “It’s an amazing honour to lead a Manchester United team. It’s not something I ever imagined happening like this,” he said, while also acknowledging that the circumstances of Amorim’s departure made the moment bittersweet.
