In response to escalating air quality concerns and the annual smog issue, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued directives on Friday aimed at mitigating the problem. These directives include suspending all new construction projects in Lahore between October and March and promoting cycling as a means to combat rising smog levels in the city.
Justice Shahid Karim, presiding over the case, underscored the importance of adopting sustainable measures to enhance air quality during the smog season.
During the court proceedings, Justice Shahid Karim inquired about the number of ongoing construction projects in Lahore.
The government lawyer provided information that indicated there were currently five active projects, with one near completion in Shahdara.
However, the court specified that work on the Niazi Interchange to Babu Sabu project could commence in February, subject to a condition – the government must furnish data detailing how these projects would impact air quality.
Justice Karim stated, “The environmental impact of these projects must be thoroughly assessed, and the government is required to present the collected data in the upcoming court hearing.”
Additionally, the Lahore High Court mandated the integration of water treatment plants into the construction of ten marla houses.
Justice Shahid Karim also proposed an innovative solution to address air pollution during the smog season: the promotion of cycling. Given Lahore’s recurring issue of hazardous smog during the winter months, encouraging pollution-free transportation modes such as cycling has the potential to significantly reduce pollution levels.
