Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefly met in Dhaka on Wednesday, where they exchanged greetings and shook hands.
Sources said the short interaction happened on the sidelines of the funeral of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Jaishankar approached Ayaz Sadiq, and both leaders shared polite and cordial remarks.
The meeting took place as leaders from across South Asia gathered in Dhaka to attend Khaleda Zia’s funeral prayers. Ayaz Sadiq represented Pakistan at the ceremony, which was also attended by Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and thousands of mourners.
Officials clarified that the interaction was limited to greetings only and no formal talks were held. This was the first brief contact between representatives of Pakistan and India since the conflict in May.
Relations between the two countries had worsened after a deadly attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir, followed by missile exchanges. Tensions later eased after international efforts led to a ceasefire between the two sides.
