Trump to receive Israel’s highest civilian honor in 2026

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Donald Trump will be awarded Israel’s highest civilian honor, the Israel Prize, in 2026. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that Israel will break tradition by giving the prize to a non-citizen, recognizing Trump’s support for the country.

Netanyahu praised Trump as Israel’s “greatest friend ever” and said the award reflects “overwhelming sentiment” among Israelis for his role in supporting Israel and brokering a Gaza peace deal that led to the release of hostages taken by Hamas in 2023.

Normally reserved for Israeli citizens or residents, the Israel Prize has rarely been given to non-Israelis; the only other recipient in a special category was Indian conductor Zubin Mehta in 1991.

Trump called the award “really surprising and very much appreciated,” and hinted he might attend the ceremony in Israel, which traditionally takes place on the eve of the country’s Independence Day.

The honor adds to Trump’s claims of being a global peacemaker, following other symbolic awards like the FIFA Peace Prize, though he has repeatedly expressed disappointment at not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize.
