OpenAI in early talks to raise funds at $750 billion valuation

OpenAI has held preliminary discussions with investors about raising new funding at a valuation of approximately $750 billion, according to a report by The Information on Wednesday.

The ChatGPT developer could seek to raise up to $100 billion, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report, and OpenAI has not yet commented publicly.

If completed, the fundraising would mark a nearly 50% increase from OpenAI’s reported $500 billion valuation in October, which followed a secondary share sale allowing current and former employees to sell about $6.6 billion worth of stock.

IPO preparations underway

Separately, Microsoft-backed OpenAI is preparing for what could become one of the largest initial public offerings in history, with internal estimates placing a potential IPO valuation at up to $1 trillion, Reuters previously reported. The company may file with securities regulators as early as the second half of 2026.

AI investment boom continues

The prospective fundraising highlights the AI industry’s surging demand for capital and computing power, as firms race to develop systems approaching or exceeding human-level capabilities.

This year, OpenAI has signed multi-billion-dollar partnerships with major technology players including Nvidia and Oracle to expand its AI infrastructure.

However, investors remain cautious, watching closely for signs that AI demand could cool or that the massive investments pouring into the sector may not deliver the expected long-term returns.
