In a significant move aimed at propelling Pakistan’s IT sector to new heights, the government has unveiled an extensive plan designed to substantially increase IT exports and provide training to freelancers in the country. This comprehensive strategy, which also encompasses the development of the telecom sector, will be executed through the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) platform.
Key components of this multifaceted plan include bolstering the local manufacturing of smart devices, such as mobile phones, training one million freelancers, and establishing technology zones. The overarching objective is to elevate IT and telecom exports from their current $2.6 billion mark to an impressive $15 billion. Achieving this goal necessitates substantial investments in telecom infrastructure and the construction of robust cloud infrastructure.
To facilitate the development of the IT sector, the government is set to introduce an infrastructure sharing framework and create a comprehensive ecosystem master plan. Additionally, the plan envisages the localization of smart device manufacturing in Pakistan.
In a bid to empower the burgeoning freelancing community, the government is committed to training one million freelancers within the IT sector. This initiative will be further supported by the establishment of freelancing centers across the country and the registration of IT firms in special economic zones.
Looking to the long term, the plan involves preparing an additional 0.2 million high-tech IT professionals, while also taking steps to enhance the quality of IT graduates in the country.
In a nod to the evolving tech landscape, the government intends to draft regulations for smartphone financing by the next month. Furthermore, an expert committee will be convened to review the national artificial intelligence (AI) policy, positioning Pakistan to harness the potential of AI for economic growth and innovation.
To provide a boost to the telecom industry, the government will offer an industrial power tariff for the next three to five years. Additionally, a telecom tribunal will be established to efficiently resolve industry disputes, promoting a favorable business environment.
To attract foreign investment, the government plans to organize events under the Digital Foreign Direct Investment Initiative. Furthermore, it is committed to ensuring Pakistan’s active participation in international IT expos, conferences, and trade shows, thereby showcasing the nation’s IT prowess on the global stage.
