The latest diplomatic engagements between Pakistan and Egypt have once again highlighted the growing importance of Pakistan Egypt defence cooperation. During a significant meeting at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir to discuss defence, security, and regional stability. This high-level interaction reflects a renewed commitment by both nations to deepen their strategic partnership.
High-Level Engagement at GHQ
The meeting between Field Marshal Asim Munir and Dr. Abdelatty focused on military collaboration, training programmes, and ways to strengthen regional security. Both sides emphasised that continued high-level engagements are essential for advancing Pakistan–Egypt defence cooperation, especially at a time when global challenges demand stronger alliances.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the leaders agreed that cooperation between the armed forces of both nations remains a central pillar of their relationship. They highlighted the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and expanding military exchanges.
Part of a Broader Two-Day Visit
The Egyptian foreign minister’s visit to Pakistan from November 29 to 30 included meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and senior officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of the most important outcomes of the visit was the reaffirmation of Pakistan–Egypt defence cooperation, which remains crucial in addressing shared security challenges such as terrorism and regional instability.
Strengthening Economic and Business Links
Beyond defence, both countries are working to enhance trade and economic ties. DPM Ishaq Dar announced that Pakistan will provide Egypt with a list of 250 transparent, pre-screened business enterprises for inclusion in Egypt’s “white list,” making it easier for Pakistani companies to operate in the Egyptian market. Another list of 250 firms will be submitted within six months, raising the total to 500.
The two nations also agreed to establish a Pakistan Egypt Business Council. This institutional mechanism aims to accelerate bilateral trade, diversify economic engagement, and build long-term partnerships between private sectors of both countries.
Visa Facilitation for Better Mobility
A key development during the visit was the finalisation of a new visa facilitation mechanism. This initiative is designed to reduce delays, address frequent complaints, and streamline travel for businesspeople and officials. Improved mobility is expected to contribute indirectly to Pakistan–Egypt defence cooperation, as easier travel enables better coordination, training links, and delegation-level exchanges.
Revitalising Dialogue Forums and Committees
Political consultations between Pakistan and Egypt will be held in Pakistan during the first quarter of 2026, with the next session scheduled in Cairo in the second quarter. Additionally, for the first time since 2010, both countries have agreed to convene the Joint Ministerial Commission in 2026. This long-renewed dialogue mechanism is intended to broaden cooperation in various sectors, including security, counter-terrorism, and regional diplomacy.
Egypt’s Strong Support and Condolences
Dr. Abdelatty expressed deep condolences over the recent terrorist attacks in Islamabad and Peshawar. He conveyed solidarity from the Egyptian government and people, assuring Pakistan that Egypt stands firmly with it in the fight against terrorism. This reaffirmation further strengthens Pakistan–Egypt defence cooperation, as both nations share similar experiences and challenges related to violent extremism.
The Egyptian foreign minister praised Pakistan’s resilience and highlighted the mutual respect that shapes their diplomatic ties. He noted that both countries face similar economic, political, and security challenges, making cooperation all the more essential.
Elevating the Partnership to a Strategic Level
Dr. Abdelatty emphasised that peace and stability are the foundations of the Pakistan–Egypt strategic partnership. He expressed Cairo’s desire to elevate the relationship to a strategic level while revitalising institutional mechanisms, especially the Joint Ministerial Committee. This direction aligns with Pakistan’s vision of deepening its regional partnerships and expanding its international defence cooperation.
The recent visit of Egypt’s foreign minister marks an important milestone in the evolving relationship between the two nations. With renewed commitments and clear goals, Pakistan–Egypt defence cooperation is set to grow stronger in the coming years. From high-level military engagements to trade facilitation and strategic dialogue forums, both countries are taking concrete steps to enhance cooperation. As regional and global challenges continue to evolve, this partnership will play a crucial role in ensuring peace, stability, and mutual prosperity.
