In a new interview with Netflix Tudum, Wednesday creators Miles Millar and Al Gough opened up about the shocking Season 2 cliffhanger surrounding Ophelia Frump, the long-missing sister of Morticia Addams — and how her absence has deeply affected the Addams family.
Millar explained that Ophelia’s disappearance has cast a long shadow over Morticia’s life.
“Ophelia has been away for a long time, and her absence has left a void in Morticia’s life with many unanswered questions. Her return is poised to dramatically affect this family.”
Gough added that the mystery was always part of the long-term plan:
“We always intended to surprise viewers with a glimpse of her at the end of the season, paving the way for Season 3.”
Eva Green Joins as Aunt Ophelia — A Perfectly Wicked Fit
Season 2 finally introduced Ophelia — though only from behind — revealing her scribbling “Wednesday must die” on a wall while wearing a flower crown. Now, she officially has a face.
Eva Green, known for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Dark Shadows, will portray the enigmatic, emotionally volatile Aunt Ophelia in Season 3. Her casting reunites her with longtime collaborator Tim Burton.
The showrunners say Green’s presence is exactly what the role demanded:
“Elegant, haunting, beautifully unpredictable — the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia.”
Green herself said she’s excited to add her own brand of chaos:
“I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckoo-ness to the Addams family.”
How Ophelia’s Absence Shaped Season 2
Throughout Season 2, Morticia refers to Ophelia as missing after losing control of her Raven powers — a chilling parallel to Wednesday’s own psychic breakdown earlier in the season.
In the finale, Morticia hands Wednesday Ophelia’s old journal. Instantly, Wednesday’s powers surge back, triggering a grim vision: Ophelia imprisoned in a dungeon-like room in Grandmama Hester’s mansion.
Millar says this sets up major emotional stakes:
“The reemergence of Ophelia is going to hit this family like a bomb.”
