Karachi residents forced to cook on firewood amid severe gas shortages

Karachi is witnessing severe gas loadshedding weeks before the peak winter season, leaving households across several neighbourhoods struggling to manage basic cooking needs.

Residents of PIB Colony and adjoining localities report that gas supply has remained disrupted for nearly 20 consecutive days, forcing families to resort to firewood and costly LPG cylinders.

The persistent shortage has triggered protests in Jahangir Road, Jamshed Quarters, Martin Quarters, and PIB Colony, where frustrated citizens blocked roads and chanted slogans demanding immediate restoration of gas supply.

“Bills arrive on time, but gas hasn’t come for months,” residents complained, adding that the crisis is unfolding in Karachi—Pakistan’s economic hub that generates 70% of the national revenue, yet remains deprived of essential utilities.

Residents also accused their elected MNAs, MPAs, and local government officials of neglecting their responsibilities and showing no concern for the growing hardship.

The shortage of gas has been accompanied by water supply suspensions, worsening the living conditions for thousands of households in the affected areas.
