Netflix drama Adolescence wins Golden Rose at Rose d’Or awards after record-breaking success

The Rose d’Or Awards have announced that their most prestigious honour, the Golden Rose, will be awarded to Netflix’s critically acclaimed drama Adolescence, co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham.

The drama, which recently achieved a record-breaking awards sweep, has been recognised for its exceptional contribution to television and its impact on public discourse. The Golden Rose is awarded to a programme or series that goes beyond genre expectations and becomes part of national or international conversation.

Adolescence was also a finalist in the Drama category at the 64th Rose d’Or Awards, which celebrate excellence and innovation across global television.

A Prestigious Honour

The Golden Rose is considered the top accolade of the ceremony. Past recipients include:

  • Chernobyl (2019)
  • ITV documentary Storming the Capitol: The Inside Story (2021)

Mark Rowland, Chair of the Rose d’Or Awards, praised the Netflix drama, saying:

“Adolescence exemplifies the values of this special Golden Rose award – outstanding programme-making that changes the way people think about a subject. Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham have created a work of true emotional and cultural impact, and we are thrilled to recognise their achievement.”

Jack Thorne is expected to attend the awards ceremony in London on December 1.

About the Drama

Adolescence tells the harrowing story of a teenage boy accused of murder after becoming entangled in online “incel” culture. The series has averaged 45 million views per month, becoming particularly popular among parents for its portrayal of real-world online dangers facing teens.

Youngest-Ever Male Emmy Winner

Earlier this year, the show made headlines when 15-year-old Owen Cooper became the youngest-ever male Emmy winner. Cooper, originally from Washington, won Best Supporting Actor for his acclaimed performance as Jamie Miller in the four-part Netflix series, which he filmed at age 14.

The young star earned a standing ovation as he accepted his award from Sydney Sweeney, surpassing established performers including Javier Bardem.
