The Shalimar Express inauguration at Karachi Cantt Station has marked a significant milestone in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernise its railway network. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while leading the ceremony, highlighted the government’s commitment to transforming Pakistan Railways through digitisation, upgraded facilities, and enhanced connectivity that will ultimately strengthen the national economy.
The event was attended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, and other senior officials who celebrated the revitalisation of one of the country’s most important passenger trains. The Shalimar Express inauguration also included the opening of newly upgraded waiting rooms and CIP lounges, reflecting the government’s focus on raising passenger comfort to international standards.
A New Era for Pakistan Railways
Speaking at the ceremony, the prime minister emphasised that modern and efficient transportation systems are essential for economic development. The Shalimar Express inauguration is part of a broader plan to overhaul key railway stations across Pakistan. With Karachi Cantt and Lahore Station already revamped, the next phase involves updating stations nationwide to deliver safer, faster, and more enjoyable travel experiences.
PM Shehbaz praised the work of Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi, who he called the “hero of today’s ceremony” for successfully modernising major stations within a short timeframe. The prime minister reiterated that the government will continue working with all provinces—including Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan—to ensure uniform development across the railway network.
Strengthening Provincial Partnerships
During the Shalimar Express inauguration, PM Shehbaz announced that the federal and Sindh governments are collaborating closely to revive the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project. He assured full support for including the KCR in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), calling it a vital project for Karachi’s growing population. This partnership also extends to freight operations, especially the transportation of Thar coal, where both governments are investing equally.
The prime minister noted that 54 railway stations have already been modernised across Pakistan, and once the nationwide revamp is completed, he would recommend a presidential award for the railways minister in recognition of the significant progress.
Modernising Passenger Travel
Under the government’s vision, the Shalimar Express inauguration represents more than just the launch of an upgraded train—it symbolizes a new standard for passenger travel in Pakistan. The redesigned train operating between Karachi and Lahore now offers enhanced amenities, improved interiors, and a cleaner, more efficient travel experience.
Visitors at the Karachi Cantt Station were able to tour the refurbished waiting areas, CIP lounge, dining hall, and newly installed computerised ticketing system. These improvements aim to restore public confidence in rail travel and support a shift from road-based transportation to a more sustainable railway network.
Infrastructure Expansion and International Connectivity
During the ceremony, PM Shehbaz shared promising updates on several major infrastructure projects. Pakistan Railways has initiated discussions with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for a $2 billion loan to upgrade the Karachi–Rohri railway line. This modernised track will later connect to the Reko Diq mining project, expanding economic opportunities.
He also highlighted plans to revive the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul rail route, a critical corridor for regional trade. Additionally, the government aims to extend the network toward Central Asia via the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan railway line, which would significantly boost commercial activity and enhance Pakistan’s strategic importance in regional transportation.
Reforming Railway Management
The Shalimar Express inauguration also allowed the government to highlight new administrative reforms. Fourteen trains are being outsourced under a policy designed to improve efficiency and reduce financial losses. Railway hospitals and schools are being shifted under private administration while ensuring full protection for employees.
Work on the long-delayed ML-1 project is progressing, promising high-speed travel, safer tracks, and increased freight capacity. These reforms align with the broader vision of making Pakistan Railways one of the most reliable and modern transportation systems in the region.
Commitment to Karachi’s Growth
PM Shehbaz once again emphasised Karachi’s central role in the national economy. He stated that Karachi is not only the country’s economic hub but the heart of Pakistan, deserving world-class transportation facilities. Through projects like the KCR, upgraded stations, and enhanced train services, the government aims to restore Karachi’s infrastructure and fuel its economic potential.
