Elon Musk has announced “X Chat,” a major new communication tool now rolling out to a limited group of beta testers. Revealed on Thursday by the platform’s owner and Chief Technical Officer, the feature is built directly into X — despite earlier hints that it might launch as a standalone product.
“X Chat” fully replaces and merges with traditional DMs, transforming the platform’s messaging system into a more powerful, encrypted communication hub. The updated system includes:
- Fully end-to-end encrypted messaging
- Audio and video calling
- File sharing
- Disappearing messages
Musk announced the launch in a post saying:
“X just rolled out an entire new communications stack with encrypted messages, audio/video calls, and file transfer.”
Unified Encryption for All Messages
Unlike the current DM system — where only paid subscribers can access a separate tab for encrypted chats — X Chat provides a single, fully encrypted layer for every conversation. This means older, previously unencrypted messages will now be protected as well.
Musk has previously compared this encryption model to that used by Signal and WhatsApp.
Mandatory PIN Frustrates Users
To access X Chat, users must create a four-digit PIN. Every time they open their messages, the interface requires them to enter the PIN again — a step many beta users have found annoying and inconvenient.
Ongoing Expansion Across the Platform
In addition to X Chat, the company has launched:
- Grokipedia
- X API beta
Christopher Park, Head of X’s Developer Platform, shared these updates in a separate post.
The company is also preparing to roll out several upcoming upgrades, including:
- A major improvement to Grok Imagine with video generation up to 15 seconds
- X Money
- A Grok-powered X feed
“X Chat” marks one of the most significant steps yet toward Musk’s vision of turning X into an all-in-one “everything app.”
