Dakota Johnson reflects on growing up in Hollywood and announces her directorial debut.

Dakota Johnson has opened up about the advantages and challenges of being born into a Hollywood dynasty, acknowledging both the glamour and the pressures that came with being the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

In a new Vogue Germany cover story, the 36-year-old actress described how her parents’ fame often made her childhood “quite scary,” recalling moments when fans would aggressively approach her mother in public places like supermarkets. “When I was little, there were times when it was really quite scary,” Johnson said, adding that being exposed to such situations at a young age could cause “personal complexities” and make life in the public eye feel “invasive and painful.”

Coming from a family deeply rooted in film—her grandmother is actress Tippi Hedren and her former stepfather is Antonio Banderas—Johnson admitted that constantly moving made it difficult to form lasting friendships. “I always accepted it: This is what we do. It’s in our blood,” she shared.

Johnson made her acting debut at age 9 in Banderas’s 1999 film Crazy in Alabama, directed by her stepfather, though she wasn’t allowed to pursue acting seriously until after high school. At 17, she was named Miss Golden Globe 2006, the same honor her mother received in 1975. The title was discontinued by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2022.

By 18, Johnson had signed with IMG Models and later joined the William Morris Agency, using her early exposure to Hollywood to shape a successful career in both modeling and acting. She credits her mother with teaching her self-confidence: “If you’re not told from a young age that you’re perfect and smart and special, it can really break you,” she reflected.

Moving Behind the Camera

Johnson recently announced her feature directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama A Tree Is Blue, set to begin filming next month in Los Angeles. The $10 million project stars Charli XCX, Jessica Alba, and Vanessa Burghardt, and centers on the life of an autistic teenager.

Previously, Johnson directed the short film Loser Baby in 2024 and a music video for Coldplay.

Upcoming Projects

In addition to her directorial venture, Johnson will star as Lowen Ashleigh in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel Verity, slated for release in U.S. theaters on October 2, 2026. Before gaining global recognition in the Fifty Shades trilogy, Johnson caught Hollywood’s attention with her supporting role as Amelia in David Fincher’s 2010 classic The Social Network.

Personal Life

On the personal front, Dakota Johnson recently ended her seven-year on-and-off relationship with Chris Martin, the frontman of the British band Coldplay. Despite the split, Johnson continues to balance her creative pursuits and evolving career, stepping into a new phase as both an actress and filmmaker.
