Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson has suggested that club legend Cristiano Ronaldo could make a sensational return to Old Trafford — but not as a player.
Speaking to Goal, Simpson revealed that he believes Ronaldo remains emotionally connected to Manchester United and might come back to the club in a different capacity, potentially in a decision-making or ambassadorial role.
“I wouldn’t say no. If you look at his mentality, he obviously cares about the club,” Simpson said. “I think he would like to come back again but in another way. I don’t think he liked the way he left, so he’d want to return and help make United great again — maybe in a role where he’s involved in making key decisions.”
Simpson added that Ronaldo’s business acumen and leadership could be invaluable to Manchester United’s future. “The business side is very different, but he’s also a businessman. You can’t knock the team he has around him. I’d love him to come back because he’s got so much to offer — his mentality, his drive, everything he touches turns to success. That’s what United need.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, who enjoyed two spells with Manchester United — from 2003 to 2009 and then from 2021 to 2022 — left the club on tense terms following a fallout during his second stint. He later joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in December 2022, where he continues to play at the age of 40.
