Sajid Khan Cleared to Play as Pakistan Finalize Squad for First Test Against South Africa

Left-arm spinner Asif Afridi’s anticipated Test debut has been delayed after off-spinner Sajid Khan was cleared to play for Pakistan in the opening Test against South Africa, starting tomorrow (Sunday) at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. The team management had initially planned to include Asif alongside Noman Ali since Sajid missed several training sessions due to a viral fever. However, after passing a fitness test on Saturday, Sajid was declared fit to play, giving Pakistan a boost ahead of the series opener.

Pakistan’s management closely monitored Sajid’s recovery throughout the week, and his inclusion strengthens the team’s spin attack, which is expected to play a key role on the turning pitch in Lahore. With Sajid’s return, Asif Afridi will have to wait a little longer for his Test debut, though the team remains confident about his future prospects.

The series marks the beginning of Pakistan’s ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 campaign. Facing defending champions South Africa, captain Shan Masood has emphasized the importance of starting the new cycle strongly, especially in home conditions. The Gaddafi Stadium pitch, known to offer spin as the match progresses, is expected to favor the home side’s bowling unit.

Among the major highlights is the return of left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is set to play his first Test in nearly a year. With 116 wickets in 31 Tests, Shaheen will lead Pakistan’s pace attack. He will share the new ball with Hasan Ali, who has taken 80 wickets in 24 Tests and last appeared against Australia in Sydney in January 2024. Their experience will be vital in providing early breakthroughs.

In the batting lineup, Imam-ul-Haq returns to partner Abdullah Shafique at the top. Shan Masood, Babar Azam, and Saud Shakeel will form the middle order, while Mohammad Rizwan will take charge as wicketkeeper. Salman Ali Agha will add balance to the side with his all-round abilities.

Pakistan’s spin duo of Sajid Khan and Noman Ali will be crucial in exploiting conditions against a South African side not fully accustomed to spin-friendly pitches. The visitors, led by stand-in captain Aiden Markram, will look to put up a strong fight despite injuries to key players.

The first Test will be played from October 12 to 16 in Lahore, followed by the second from October 20 to 24 in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan’s likely XI: Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (captain), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Noman Ali, and Sajid Khan.
