Pakistan Navy day: honoring the heroes of Operation Somnath.

Pakistan Navy Day is observed today to pay tribute to the courageous heroes of the 1965 war, who through Operation Somnath (Dwarka Raid), demonstrated unmatched bravery against a much larger adversary and defended the motherland with absolute resolve.

This day commemorates Pakistan Navy’s first-ever naval offensive, when its warships executed a daring strike on Indian shore installations at Dwarka, inflicting damage and delivering a decisive psychological setback to the enemy.

Operation Somnath – A Defining Moment

During the September 1965 war, the Pakistan Navy launched Operation Somnath, a bold move that showcased Pakistan’s growing naval strength.

On the night of 7 September 1965, a flotilla led by PNS Babur, along with PNS Khaibar and PNS Badr, advanced towards the Indian coastal town of Dwarka in Gujarat. Their primary target was the radar station used by the Indian Air Force to guide its operations against Pakistan.

At midnight, the Navy ships opened fire, bombarding the radar installation and surrounding areas. The mission successfully disabled the radar system, disrupting enemy coordination and striking a powerful psychological blow. Remarkably, all Pakistani ships returned safely without suffering any casualties.

Symbolism and Impact

Operation Somnath was not merely a tactical success but a demonstration of resolve and capability. With limited resources compared to India’s larger fleet, Pakistan proved its ability to strike deep into enemy waters and protect national security.

The operation uplifted the morale of the armed forces and underlined the Navy’s crucial role in Pakistan’s defense. The Dwarka Raid became a symbol of courage, reminding adversaries that Pakistan’s strength was not confined to land and air alone – its naval arm stood ready to respond with precision and power.
