Incessant heavy rainfall battered India’s financial hub, Mumbai, on Monday, leading to flight disruptions, waterlogged roads, and school closures.
According to the weather department, some parts of the city recorded over 140 mm (5 inches) of rain since morning, leaving vehicles stranded on submerged streets and causing major traffic jams.
Late Sunday night, three people were injured when the staircase of a two-storey building collapsed in a southern district of Mumbai.
Authorities issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas, warning of heavy rain through Monday and Tuesday. Residents have been advised to remain indoors.
News outlet NDTV reported that at least nine incoming flights aborted landing due to the adverse weather, though it was unclear whether they were diverted.
The downpour comes as torrential rains over the past two weeks have already claimed dozens of lives and inundated villages in India’s Himalayan region.
