PM Shehbaz visits Gilgit-Baltistan to review flood damage as monsoon toll rises to 299.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is undertaking a one-day visit to Gilgit-Baltistan today (Monday) to assess the damage caused by recent torrential rains and flooding in the region.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will meet with flood-affected residents, distribute compensation cheques, and evaluate the situation on the ground. He is also scheduled to chair a meeting to review the losses incurred due to the severe weather and hold discussions with Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that the nationwide death toll from monsoon-related incidents has risen to 299, up from 234. The ongoing monsoon season, which began in late June, continues to cause widespread devastation.

According to updated NDMA figures, the fatalities include 140 children, 102 men, and 57 women, while 715 people have been injured — including 239 children, 204 women, and 272 men. The floods have also damaged 1,676 homes, with 562 completely destroyed, and caused the loss of 428 livestock.

Since June 26, NDMA teams have rescued and evacuated 2,880 individuals from affected areas. Relief efforts remain active, with more than 13,000 essential items distributed so far. These include nearly 2,000 tents, over 1,100 food packs, 1,200 kitchen kits, as well as blankets, mattresses, hygiene kits, life jackets, and de-watering pumps.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert for further rainfall between August 4 and 7. Northern and central regions are expected to face rain, wind, and thunderstorms, with occasional heavy showers. Rain is likely in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, and Gilgit-Baltistan, while Balochistan may experience hot and humid weather with isolated showers in the northeast and south. Coastal areas of Sindh are expected to see light rain and cloudy skies.
