In a bold move to boost aviation safety, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a sweeping operation to eliminate bird-related threats near Lahore’s airports.
To prevent bird strikes on aircraft, certain areas will be designated as “no-bird zones,” with strict action against activities that attract birds. The CM has tasked the district administration, Punjab Wildlife Department, and Environmental Protection Authority with immediate implementation. Additionally, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has been assigned to activate the province’s first dedicated Wildlife Force.
All unauthorized slaughterhouses and poultry farms near airports will be shut down, while strict regulations will be enforced on waste disposal by food businesses, especially bakeries and restaurants located in sensitive zones.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that no business contributing to bird attraction will be tolerated near airports. A formal government notification has been issued, banning slaughterhouses, bakeries, and poultry farms without adequate environmental safeguards.
The order also enforces proper disposal of animal hides, prohibits open garbage dumping, and mandates the use of covered waste bins in airport areas. Furthermore, practices such as rooftop grain scattering, pigeon breeding, and mass pigeon flying in residential neighborhoods will be banned. Feeding birds in public places and temples will also be restricted. Wildlife Rangers have been instructed to begin enforcement operations immediately under the Punjab Wildlife Act.
