Pakistan invites Oscar submissions for 98th Academy Awards’ international feature film category.

The Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has officially invited filmmakers to submit their entries for the 98th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category by August 15, 2025.

As outlined in a recent media report, this prestigious category is open to films produced outside the United States that contain at least 50% non-English dialogue. Animated and documentary films are also eligible, provided they meet the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) criteria.

Key Submission Guidelines:

  • Theatrical Release Requirement:
Eligible films must have a minimum seven-day consecutive theatrical run in a commercial cinema between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025 — in Pakistan or abroad, excluding the U.S. and its territories.
  • Non-Theatrical Premieres Not Allowed:
Films that premiered on TV, streaming platforms, or online before their theatrical release will be ineligible.
  • Language and Subtitles:
Dialogue must be primarily non-English, with clear English subtitles required.
  • Distribution Standards:
Films must follow standard theatrical distribution practices including promotion.

Selection Process:

Members of the Pakistani Selection Committee include filmmakers, artists, and technical experts, chosen through nominations and referrals. The Chairperson proposes the list to the Academy’s International Feature Film Executive Committee for approval.

Each committee member watches all submitted films independently, casting votes in accordance with the Academy’s voting system. Final votes are tallied in collaboration with AMPAS, and one film is selected as Pakistan’s official submission.

Notable past submissions from Pakistan include Joyland, In Flames, and The Glassworker.

Filmmakers are strongly encouraged to review all eligibility rules thoroughly and ensure technical and release standards are met.

Filmmakers can request submission forms, guidelines, or ask questions by emailing the committee at the address provided in the press release.
