PAF Chief’s Historic U.S. Visit Rekindles Pakistan–U.S. Defence Ties After a Decade

PAF Chief’s

In a major diplomatic and strategic development, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu has completed a historic official visit to the United States — the first by a serving Pakistan Air Force (PAF) chief in over ten years. This milestone visit is seen as a significant step toward revitalizing defence cooperation between the two nations amid evolving regional and global security dynamics.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Air Chief Marshal Sidhu engaged in high-level meetings with senior U.S. military and political leadership, both at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. The aim of the visit was to rebuild institutional linkages, foster operational interoperability, and reaffirm mutual commitment to regional peace and stability.

Strategic Engagements at the Pentagon

During his visit to the Pentagon, the PAF chief met with Kelli L. Seybolt, the U.S. Secretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, and General David W. Allvin, the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. These discussions centered on enhancing bilateral military cooperation, initiating joint training programs, and expanding avenues for advanced technology sharing.

Air Chief Marshal Sidhu emphasized Pakistan’s enduring commitment to its defence ties with the United States, calling for sustained high-level engagement to push forward collaborative defence initiatives that benefit both nations.

The ISPR noted that these engagements have laid the groundwork for renewed strategic dialogue, especially in the areas of air defence, operational readiness, and counterterrorism.

Focus on Regional Security at the State Department

At the U.S. State Department, Air Chief Sidhu held in-depth discussions with Brown L. Stanley of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs and Eric Meyer from the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs.

The talks covered a range of critical topics including Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, regional security developments, and the country’s vision for long-term peace in South and Central Asia. The Air Chief reiterated Pakistan’s pivotal role as a regional stabilizer and a committed partner in global counterterrorism efforts.

Building Bridges on Capitol Hill

The visit also featured a series of meetings with prominent U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Among those the Air Chief met were Congressman Mike Turner, Congressman Rich McCormick, and Congressman Bill Huizenga. These sessions allowed Pakistan to share its strategic perspective, articulate its security concerns, and advocate for greater bilateral defence engagement.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, U.S. lawmakers appreciated the PAF’s role in maintaining regional stability and acknowledged the importance of continuous communication and cooperation between the two nations in the defence sector.

Strengthening a Strategic Partnership

This visit comes at a crucial time when both countries are reassessing their regional strategies amid rising geopolitical tensions. While Pakistan seeks to diversify its defence partnerships, the United States remains interested in engaging with stable regional actors to promote peace and counter terrorism.

The ISPR termed the visit a strategic milestone in the history of Pakistan–U.S. relations. It is expected to result in expanded joint military exercises, exchange of technological expertise, and closer institutional collaboration between the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and the United States Air Force (USAF).

A Vision for the Future

Air Chief Sidhu’s visit underscores Pakistan’s readiness to engage with international partners and enhance its defence capabilities through mutual learning, shared training opportunities, and strategic dialogue.

It also reinforces Pakistan’s image as a country committed to peace, cooperation, and international law — a message the Air Chief consistently delivered throughout his meetings.

Observers believe that this landmark visit could reopen avenues for future defence agreements, security partnerships, and multilateral cooperation on critical global challenges, including cyber warfare, air defence modernization, and drone technology integration.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, this high-level visit signals a renewed phase of trust and cooperation between Pakistan and the United States — one built on strategic alignment, mutual respect, and a shared vision for peace.
