the pakistan cricket board (pcb) on monday named former all-rounder azhar mahmood as the interim head coach of the men’s national red-ball team.
in a statement, the pcb said mahmood will serve in this role until his short-term contract expires.
the board highlighted mahmood’s previous experience as assistant head coach of the national team, stating that his promotion was based on his performance, familiarity with the players, and a strong understanding of the team’s dynamics.
“azhar mahmood’s presence will be valuable given his vast international and coaching experience,” the pcb noted. “his prior involvement with the team allows for continuity and will help maintain stability in the dressing room.”
mahmood represented pakistan in 21 test matches and 143 one-day internationals between 1996 and 2007. he has also held various coaching roles globally, including a tenure as bowling coach for the national side and coaching assignments in several t20 leagues.
sources within the pcb said that a decision on the permanent red-ball head coach would be taken after the ongoing evaluation process for long-term appointments is completed.
