The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly has suspended 26 opposition members for 15 days after they disrupted proceedings during Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s appearance in the House.
The uproar occurred during Friday’s session, where opposition lawmakers shouted slogans, held up placards, and repeatedly interrupted the assembly’s business.
Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan called the protest a clear violation of assembly rules and said the action was necessary to maintain order.
“This House cannot be allowed to descend into chaos,” he stated, adding that discipline and decorum must be upheld at all times.
Opposition parties, however, condemned the move and called it undemocratic. A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader reacted strongly, saying, “Even if you expel them for 15 years, our fight against this government will go on.”
On the other hand, lawmakers from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supported the speaker’s decision, arguing that it was essential to prevent disruptions and ensure smooth legislative proceedings.
