In a significant acknowledgment of Pakistan’s role in regional and global security, US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla has praised Pakistan as a vital partner in the international fight against terrorism, specifically highlighting its contributions to curbing the rise and operations of ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K)—one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world today.
Strong Endorsement at the US Senate
Speaking before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, General Kurilla provided a detailed briefing on the current state of global terrorism and the partnerships that have proven essential in countering these threats. Among those partners, Pakistan stood out prominently.
Kurilla emphasized Pakistan’s proactive and constructive role in counterterrorism, noting that its efforts are widely recognized by the international community. The CENTCOM chief lauded the close intelligence collaboration between Pakistani security agencies and US counterparts, which he said has led to significant operational successes against extremist groups, especially ISIS-K.
Pakistan’s Role in Disrupting ISIS-K Networks
General Kurilla described ISIS-K as one of the most active and dangerous terrorist organizations globally, with operations extending across South and Central Asia. However, he said Pakistan’s involvement has been instrumental in disrupting and neutralizing the group’s regional activities.
He credited Pakistan with helping to identify, capture, or eliminate dozens of ISIS-K operatives, including at least five senior leaders. One of the most critical milestones, Kurilla revealed, was the arrest and handover of “Jaafar,” the mastermind behind the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing at Kabul Airport, which had killed 13 US service members and dozens of Afghan civilians.
This arrest was made possible through timely intelligence sharing between Pakistan and the US, and General Kurilla highlighted that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, personally informed American officials shortly after the operation’s success. This level of direct and transparent communication, Kurilla noted, showcases the depth of military-to-military trust and cooperation between the two nations.
Continuing Counterterrorism Operations Despite Challenges
Despite operating in a challenging security environment, Pakistan continues to launch effective operations against militant networks in its border areas with Afghanistan, where ISIS-K has maintained a persistent presence. Kurilla remarked that although resources are limited, Pakistan’s strategic use of intelligence and tactical operations has severely weakened ISIS-K’s capabilities in recent months.
He stated, Pakistan is fighting an intense and active counterterrorism campaign,one that involves constant engagement along difficult terrain and high-threat zones. According to his testimony, since the beginning of 2024, over 1,000 terrorist attacks have occurred in Pakistan’s western regions, particularly near the Afghan border. These attacks have resulted in approximately 700 fatalities, including both security personnel and civilians, and more than 2,500 injuries.
This alarming statistic underscores the level of threat Pakistan continues to face, and yet it remains committed to fighting terrorism on multiple fronts. Kurilla acknowledged the resilience and capability of Pakistani forces, describing them as critical in the broader global campaign against terror.
Strategic Balance Between India and Pakistan
In addition to praising Pakistan’s counterterrorism contributions, General Kurilla emphasized the need for the United States to maintain strong relationships with both Pakistan and India. He clarified that it is not a zero-sum game, stating:
I don’t believe it’s a binary choice—having a relationship with India does not mean we can’t engage with Pakistan.
This statement reflects the United States’ balanced approach to South Asian diplomacy, where it continues to foster defense cooperation and strategic dialogue with both regional powers. Kurilla also referenced support for ongoing ceasefire efforts between Pakistan and India as a sign of regional stability that benefits global security interests.
