Bangladesh removes Sheikh Mujibur Rahman portrait from currency notes.

Bangladesh has unveiled newly redesigned currency notes that no longer feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father and father of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to a Bangladesh Bank spokesperson, the updated 20, 50, and 1000 taka notes now display natural landscapes and historical landmarks instead of human figures. The central bank confirmed that more redesigned denominations will be released in phases, while existing notes and coins will remain legal tender.

Currency design changes are not new to Bangladesh. The country’s first post-independence notes featured its national map. Later, under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Awami League, his portrait was prominently displayed. When rival parties such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) came to power, the focus shifted to historical sites and national symbols.

This change comes after a turbulent year in Bangladesh’s politics. Former PM Sheikh Hasina stepped down and left for India following massive protests and civil unrest that reportedly resulted in hundreds of deaths.
