Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif reinforces Pakistan-UAE economic partnership.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), emphasizing the desire to transform the bilateral ties into a “mutually beneficial economic partnership.” This statement follows a call between Sharif and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, where the two leaders discussed the ongoing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the realms of economy and investment.

Bilateral Cooperation and Economic Ties

Sharif highlighted the positive progress of bilateral cooperation, particularly in key areas such as railways, economic zones, and infrastructure, citing agreements signed between the two nations in January 2024, valued at over $3 billion. These agreements are expected to play a crucial role in fostering deeper economic relations.

Recent India-Pakistan Tensions

A significant portion of the conversation between the two leaders centered on the recent tensions between Pakistan and India, which resulted in armed conflict. Prime Minister Sharif expressed profound gratitude to the UAE for its diplomatic efforts in helping de-escalate the situation, commending the UAE’s constructive role in maintaining peace in the region. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to uphold the ceasefire agreement and defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

UAE’s Diplomatic Role and Pakistan’s Gratitude

The UAE President welcomed the ceasefire understanding, appreciating Pakistan’s efforts toward peace. Sharif also separately expressed his thanks to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his role in defusing tensions in South Asia.

Strategic Importance of the UAE for Pakistan

The UAE holds immense strategic significance for Pakistan, being the country’s third-largest trading partner, after China and the United States. Over the past two decades, the UAE has been a major source of foreign investment, valued at over $10 billion. The UAE is also home to over a million Pakistani expatriates, which contributes significantly to remittances. The geographical proximity between the two countries enhances trade and commercial exchanges, making the UAE an optimal export destination for Pakistan.

This renewed commitment to strengthening ties with the UAE signals Pakistan’s determination to build a more robust economic partnership, addressing key areas of mutual interest while ensuring continued peace and stability in the region.
