West Indies’ hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup suffered a heavy blow after a 65-run defeat to hosts Pakistan in Lahore. The loss—West Indies’ second in three games—has left their qualification chances hanging by a thread, while Pakistan remain undefeated and sit at the top of the table.
Pakistan, who were bowled out for just 191, successfully defended a modest total for the second time in the tournament, showcasing a disciplined bowling performance and sharp fielding. Captain Fatima Sana led the attack, finishing with 3 for 16 and removing her West Indies counterpart Hayley Matthews with the first ball of the innings.
The Windies, already struggling with the bat throughout the tournament, were rattled early with Matthews’ controversial lbw dismissal—there are no DRS reviews in the qualifier—and Shemaine Campbelle’s run-out followed shortly after. A second run-out involving Zaida James and Jannillea Glasgow further derailed the chase.
Veteran Stafanie Taylor, who had taken ill during the fielding innings, was only able to bat after five wickets had fallen. By then, the damage was largely done. Though Taylor briefly showed form with a six, her dismissal triggered a lower-order collapse.
Pakistan’s innings, while patchy, was anchored by Muneeba Ali (33 off 60) and Sidra Amin (50 off 86). The middle order, however, once again faltered, with Sidra Nawaz’s 23 being the next best score. Pakistan will be concerned by their inability to build momentum with the bat despite solid starts.
Despite the modest target, West Indies were all out for 126, failing to build any meaningful partnerships. Their bowlers—particularly Matthews and Shamilia Connell—were economical, but the team’s batting woes have become a defining issue.
Group Situation
- West Indies must now win both of their remaining matches—against Bangladesh and Thailand—and hope other results go in their favor to qualify.
- Pakistan, who still have to face Thailand and Bangladesh, are well placed to secure a World Cup spot.
- Bangladesh are also unbeaten and in a strong position to qualify.
- Thailand remain winless but can still play spoilers.
If Pakistan qualify, their World Cup matches will be held outside India as per the BCCI-PCB hybrid model agreed earlier in the year.
What’s Next
- West Indies vs Bangladesh: A must-win for Windies; a loss could eliminate them.
- Pakistan vs Thailand: Pakistan will look to cement their World Cup spot.
- Both teams will also face Bangladesh in what could become crucial deciders.
West Indies, who reached the semi-finals in the 2022 edition, now face the very real possibility of missing out on the 2025 tournament unless they stage a strong comeback—and fast.
