Meta to invest $1 billion in data center project in wisconsin for AI expansion.

Meta Platforms (META.O) is planning to invest nearly $1 billion in a new data center project in central Wisconsin as part of its broader strategy to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, Bloomberg News reported on Friday.

In February, Wisconsin reached an agreement with an unnamed company—using an alias—to develop the data center, with an expected multiyear investment of $837 million. The project behind this development is attributed to Meta, according to the report.

Both Meta and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

The push to expand data center capacity comes as technology giants ramp up capital expenditures to meet the growing computing demands of generative AI applications, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Meta has allocated up to $65 billion this year to enhance its AI infrastructure amid growing pressure from investors to demonstrate returns on these significant investments.

However, analysts warned that U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariffs could complicate the efforts of Big Tech companies like Meta to build AI infrastructure in the country, potentially undermining one of the administration’s key objectives.
