SCBA President calls for article 6 application on chief election commissioner over delayed elections.

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Calls for Article 6 to be Applied to CEC Over Delayed Elections

Addressing a Lawyers Convention, SCBA President Abid Zuberi called for Article 6 of the Constitution, which deals with treason, to be applied to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja. Zuberi accused the CEC of violating the top court’s order and the Constitution by failing to hold elections within 90 days after an assembly’s dissolution. In a split verdict on March 1, the Supreme Court ruled that elections for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab assemblies should be held within 90 days, but the CEC postponed the Punjab polls to October 8 due to security reasons. Aitzaz Ahsan, a veteran lawyer, also criticized the CEC, calling him a “facilitator” and “violator of the Constitution” for not holding timely general elections.
