A measles outbreak in Sindh has resulted in the deaths of 10 children in Khairpur district over the past two months, according to the Sindh Health Department. From January 1st to March 8th, more than 1,100 measles cases were reported across the province, with Karachi alone reporting 550 infections during this period.
Khairpur remains the most affected district, while Karachi’s East district recorded five deaths. Sukkur and Jacobabad each reported one child fatality.
Health officials attribute the rising death toll to low vaccination rates and a lack of awareness about the preventable disease. Despite the availability of vaccines, many parents avoid immunization, leaving children vulnerable. Hospitals are receiving four to six measles patients daily, with some developing severe complications like pneumonia.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection with symptoms appearing 10 to 12 days after exposure. Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and inflamed eyes, followed by white spots in the mouth and a red rash that spreads from the face to the body. While most cases resolve within a week, complications like diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia can be life-threatening.
Health authorities are urging parents to vaccinate their children and increase awareness to prevent further casualties from the ongoing outbreak.
