Protests escalate in Turkey over jailing of Istanbul mayor, erdogan blames opposition.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the ongoing protests over the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, labeling them as a “movement of violence.” He held the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) responsible for injuries to police officers and damage to property.

The mayor’s arrest last Wednesday on corruption charges, which he denies, has triggered Turkey’s largest street protests in over a decade. Despite a ban on public gatherings, nationwide demonstrations have persisted for six consecutive nights. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel has vowed to continue the protests, accusing the government of politically motivated actions.

Erdogan warned that the CHP would face political and legal consequences for the unrest. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported the detention of 1,133 protesters and injuries to 123 police officers. Opposition leaders have called for Imamoglu’s release, a televised trial, and a public debate with Erdogan.

The mayor’s supporters argue that his imprisonment is an attack on democracy, with rights groups and European countries criticizing the government’s actions. The EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee postponed its scheduled meeting, citing the unfavorable political climate.

Meanwhile, Erdogan’s reassurance to investors comes as Turkish markets experience significant losses. The Istanbul bourse saw its worst drop since 2008, reflecting uncertainty and concerns over Turkey’s political and economic stability.
