Labor secures re-election in western Australia ahead of national vote.

Australia’s Labor Party has secured re-election in Western Australia, reinforcing its dominance in the resource-rich state ahead of a national election due by mid-May.

Re-elected Premier Roger Cook celebrated the victory, stating on social media platform X, “It is a true honour to serve this beautiful state. And one I will never take for granted. Tomorrow, we get back to work. Thank you, WA.”

With 61% of votes counted, Labor had secured 40 seats, while the opposition Liberal Party managed only four, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This marks Labor’s third consecutive win in the state, which remains a key stronghold.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose national popularity has faced challenges amid rising living costs, hailed the Western Australia result as “extraordinary”. He praised Cook’s leadership and noted the strong support for Labor in the state.

In the previous 2021 state election, Labor won an unprecedented 53 out of 59 seats, largely credited to its COVID-19 response. The party also gained ground federally in 2022, securing nine of Western Australia’s 15 parliamentary seats.
