During the hearing on environmental pollution prevention, Justice Shahid Karim urged the authorities to create a structured phase-out plan for diesel buses, ensuring a smooth transition to electric alternatives. He acknowledged that while the shift might take two to three years, it remains crucial for Lahore’s long-term environmental health.
The transition to electric buses is inevitable, and even if it takes a few years, a structured policy is essential,remarked Justice Karim.
Punjab’s Efforts Toward Sustainable Transport
Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated an electric bus service in Lahore, marking the province’s commitment to greener transportation. This initiative aligns with the court’s vision of phasing out diesel-run vehicles and replacing them with electric alternatives to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
Justice Karim further instructed the Punjab Transport Department to develop policies for truck manufacturers, ensuring that they adopt cleaner fuel technologies.

The court also highlighted the need for an electric rickshaw policy. Justice Karim noted that various countries, including India, have successfully implemented electric rickshaw systems, reducing urban pollution and promoting energy efficiency. He directed rickshaw manufacturers in Punjab to collaborate and devise a strategic plan to transition from fuel-based rickshaws to electric alternatives.
Rickshaws are a major contributor to air pollution in urban centers, and converting them to electric models can significantly reduce emissions,Justice Karim stated.
Traffic and Parking Reforms for Schools
Beyond the transition to electric vehicles, the court addressed Lahore’s traffic congestion issues, particularly during school hours. Justice Karim suggested a well-coordinated traffic plan for school commutes, emphasizing the need for designated parking spaces for large educational institutions.
Schools must have mandatory parking areas to manage traffic flow and avoid congestion on public roads,he stressed.
He also called for community involvement in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring the aesthetic upkeep of public spaces in Lahore.
