Chat Cola: A symbol of resistance in the west bank.

In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, ordering a Coke with a meal often results in disapproving looks or a firm suggestion to try a local alternative: Chat Cola.

The red-can soft drink, bearing a striking resemblance to Coca-Cola, has surged in popularity as Palestinian consumers boycott American brands over U.S. support for Israel in its war against Hamas.

Since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, the boycott movement has intensified, shuttering fast-food chains and boosting local businesses. Chat Cola, once a niche product, now dominates shelves, as even major institutions like Birzeit University opt out of Coke.

Despite facing supply chain challenges under Israeli control, Chat Cola is expanding, setting up a new plant in Jordan and increasing exports to Israel’s Arab-majority cities. However, critics argue that such boycotts deepen divisions rather than foster resolution.

As demand for Chat Cola grows, it reflects both political consciousness and an effort to strengthen Palestinian economic independence—though true self-sufficiency remains a distant goal.
