Pakistan urges UN to develop peace strategy for Libya.

Pakistan has called on UN diplomatic officials in Libya to formulate a “well-defined” peacebuilding and reconciliation strategy to break the country’s long-standing political deadlock and pave the way for presidential elections and institutional unification.

Pakistan’s Stand at the UN Security Council

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Libya, Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the importance of meaningful dialogue among Libyan stakeholders to resolve disputes and unify institutions.

  • Support for Libyan-Led Peace Efforts:
    • Ambassador Akram stressed that a Libyan-owned reconciliation process is the only viable path to peace and stability.
    • He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
  • Call for a Comprehensive Peace Plan:
    • Akram acknowledged the agreement between Eastern and Western security institutions to establish a joint communication and information center as a step towards unity.
    • He urged the UN to develop a structured strategy to accelerate Libya’s transition toward inclusive elections and lasting peace.

Libya’s Ongoing Crisis

  • Political Division: Libya has remained split between two rival governments—the Government of National Unity (GNU) in the northwest and the Government of National Stability (GNS) in the east—since the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
  • Elections Delayed: The December 2021 presidential elections were canceled due to disputes over candidate eligibility and political disagreements.

International Concern Over Libya’s Stability

UN Political Affairs Chief Rosemary DiCarlo warned that Libya’s fragile stability is at risk, citing:

  • Deep political divisions
  • Economic mismanagement
  • Human rights violations
  • External interference

She urged Libyan leaders to prioritize national interests over political rivalries, while a newly formed advisory committee continues efforts to resolve election-related disputes.

Pakistan reaffirmed its support for UN-led peace efforts and pledged to contribute to Libya’s stability and development.
