Sri Lanka Thrashes Australia by 174 Runs to complete 2-0 ODI series sweep.

Australia were handed a harsh reality check ahead of next week’s ICC Champions Trophy as Sri Lanka comprehensively beat them by 174 runs in the second ODI, securing a 2-0 series victory on Friday.

Chasing a target of 282, Australia, the reigning 50-over world champions, were bowled out for a dismal 107 in just 25 overs. Despite the return of key players Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Inglis, Australia failed to recover and suffered their lowest ODI total in Asia.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had posted 281/4, with Kusal Mendis scoring an excellent 101 — his fifth ODI century — and Charith Asalanka adding an unbeaten 78. Sri Lanka’s last 10 overs yielded 97 runs, taking the total beyond 280. Despite not qualifying for the upcoming Champions Trophy, Sri Lanka showcased their strength with a dominant performance.

Australia captain Steve Smith acknowledged the skill of Sri Lanka’s bowlers but also pointed out that Australia’s batting performance was subpar. “I think it was a fine bowling performance by Sri Lanka and not a great batting performance by Australia,” Smith said.

Sri Lanka’s new ball bowlers, Asitha Fernando (3-23), Dunith Wellalage (4-35), and Wanindu Hasaranga (3-23), were exceptional, with Wellalage’s spell in particular dismantling Australia’s batting. Australia’s response faltered as they lost wickets regularly, and Smith’s 29 was the highest score in the chase.

Despite early breakthroughs by Australia’s Ben Dwarshuis and Aaron Hardie, Sri Lanka’s Mendis and Madushka laid the foundation for a commanding total. Mendis, in particular, played a patient knock, reaching his century off 113 balls, before he was dismissed by Adam Zampa.

“Australia also bowled well, but today was our day,” said Asalanka, who was named Player of the Series.

Australia’s loss ahead of the Champions Trophy has raised concerns, with the team failing to click in all aspects of the game, especially with their preparations for the global tournament fast approaching.
