Austria to acquire 12 Italian M-346 FA fighter jets for enhanced air defense.

Austria has announced plans to purchase 12 Italian-made M-346 FA fighter jets to replace the decommissioned Saab 105 aircraft, retired in late 2020.

According to military sources cited by the Krone newspaper, a letter of intent was expected to be signed on Saturday with Italy’s Ministry of Defence for the jets, manufactured by Leonardo, an Italian aerospace company.

The Austrian Defence Ministry confirmed the planned acquisition, stating that negotiations with the Italian government are underway.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer highlighted the strong partnership between Austria and Italy, acknowledging Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s pivotal role in facilitating the agreement.

“My special thanks go to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who made a significant contribution to the conclusion of this agreement,” Nehammer said.

While the total cost of the purchase is still under discussion, approximately €1 billion ($1.04 billion) has been allocated for the acquisition.

The M-346 FA fighter jets will be employed for pilot training, ground force support, and air defense operations, the Austrian government stated.
