Virat kohli fined for shoulder bump, sam konstas impresses on test debut.

India’s star batter Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Melbourne Test against Australia. The incident occurred at the end of the 10th over on Day 1 when Kohli bumped shoulders with Australian debutant Sam Konstas, leading to a heated exchange.

The charge, under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, relates to “inappropriate physical contact” with another player or official. Kohli accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, and no formal hearing was required. The charge was leveled by the on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Shawn Craig.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting criticized Kohli’s actions, describing the confrontation as deliberate:

“Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation,” Ponting remarked on Channel Seven. “Fielders should be nowhere near the batsman at that stage.”

India’s former coach Ravi Shastri also expressed disapproval, saying, “There is a line, and you don’t want to overstep that line.”

Konstas, however, played down the incident, stating during the post-day press conference:

“I think he accidentally bumped me. That’s just cricket and the tension. I was lucky to get a few runs today.”

Konstas Shines with Dazzling Debut Performance

Sam Konstas made a memorable Test debut, scoring a flamboyant 60 off 65 balls, including six boundaries and two sixes. His aggressive strokeplay against India’s leading bowler Jasprit Bumrah stood out, showcasing a fearless approach. Konstas was eventually dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja, ending a crucial 89-run opening partnership.

Australia’s Strong Start

All of Australia’s top four batters scored half-centuries, but none managed to convert their starts into big totals. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 68 at stumps, as Australia closed Day 1 at 311/6. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling attack with figures of 3/75, while Jadeja contributed with crucial breakthroughs.

The match continues to build intrigue as both teams seek control in the Boxing Day Test.
