New Zealand will wait until Saturday’s toss to decide if spinner Mitch Santner will rejoin the side for the third Test against England at Hamilton’s Seddon Oval. However, Will Young is confirmed to open alongside captain Tom Latham.
England have already secured the series with dominant wins in Christchurch and Wellington, leaving the Black Caps to reassess their squad and strategy.
Santner, who last played in October when he took 13 wickets in Pune during New Zealand’s 3-0 sweep of India, could be recalled depending on the pitch conditions.
“We’ll have a final look at the wicket tomorrow,” said Latham. “Conditions here can vary slightly.”
Latham confirmed Young’s selection, praising his recent form. Young, who stood out in India as Player of the Series while filling in for Kane Williamson, replaces Devon Conway, who is home for the birth of his first child.
If Santner plays, he will likely replace one of the seamers from the previous Tests, though Latham clarified it would not be Tim Southee. The 36-year-old swing bowler is set to retire after this match, marking his 107th Test appearance at his home ground.
“It’s a great occasion for Tim,” Latham said. “He’s going to be remembered as one of the greats of our game, not just for his numbers but also for his leadership and legacy.”
Despite a disappointing series, Latham expressed gratitude for the fans’ support and hoped the team could deliver a strong performance in Hamilton.
“We know we haven’t played to our potential, but hopefully we can give the fans something to cheer for,” he added.
