Minister of State for IT and Telecoms Shaza Fatima Khawaja has vowed to enhance Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, promising restored optimal internet speeds and improved telecom systems.
In an interview with a private news channel, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring seamless operations in the IT and telecom sectors, particularly in light of a recent rise in cyberattacks. “We are taking swift and decisive actions to strengthen our digital defenses and address these challenges,” she asserted.
She highlighted the government’s prioritization of the IT and telecom industries, underscoring efforts to upgrade existing systems. Key focus areas include improving tower intensity, expanding broadband access, and tackling cybersecurity threats. These measures aim to provide better coverage, boost economic growth, and ensure a secure online environment for citizens.
Responding to a query, Shaza Fatima shared that the Ministry of Interior is actively instructing the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to address user issues, particularly with video sharing, while maintaining 100% internet speed. She acknowledged existing challenges but assured that the government is diligently working towards solutions.
Addressing concerns about digital platforms, the minister clarified that their temporary unavailability does not hinder freedom of speech. She emphasized the right of every citizen to express their opinions, stating that the government is upgrading its web management system to counter cyberattacks and terrorist threats effectively.
Looking ahead, the minister announced plans to expand 4G and 5G services nationwide by April, enabling greater connectivity. She also celebrated a 40% growth in Pakistan’s IT and export sectors over recent months, showcasing the sector’s potential to drive economic progress.
