Riyadh summit urges ceasefire in gaza, demands halt to arms supplies to Israel.

In a strong communique, the Arab-Islamic summit called upon the United Nations Security Council to issue a binding resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, enabling swift access to humanitarian aid. The summit also urged nations supplying arms to Israel to cease the flow of weapons.

The Arab League-Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit, held in Riyadh, addressed the escalating crises in Gaza and Lebanon, both under intense Israeli attacks.

The communique called for a global ban on arms exports and transfers to Israel, encouraging countries to join an initiative proposed by Türkiye and a coalition of 18 nations, already signed by 52 countries, the OIC, and the Arab League. It further called for a unified letter to be sent to the UN Security Council, General Assembly President, and Secretary-General, urging an end to arms supplies to Israel.

Participants praised Egypt and Qatar, in cooperation with the United States, for their efforts toward achieving a swift and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. They held Israel accountable for reneging on previous agreements.

The summit reaffirmed Palestine’s sovereignty over occupied East Jerusalem, rejecting any Israeli measures to alter its identity or consolidate occupation. The communique emphasized that Jerusalem remains a “red line” for Arab and Islamic nations, pledging solidarity in protecting its Islamic and Christian heritage.

The Riyadh summit also warned that unchecked aggression against Gaza, as well as attacks on Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Iran, threaten regional stability. It underscored commitment to Lebanon’s security, condemning attacks on the Lebanese army, civilians, and UN peacekeeping forces.

Condemning Israel’s collective punishment in Gaza, including blockades and starvation, the summit demanded an independent international investigation into alleged war crimes, holding those responsible accountable for the atrocities in Gaza.
